One of the hottest UK rising singer-songwriters Leon Else who is just 24 years old has taken a legendary tune and utterly transformed it, into his own sound. Leon was asked to record his cover of Michael Jackson’s iconic “Billie Jean” as part of BBC 1Xtra’s Michael Jackson Special this week, and he has gone above and beyond on his cover, with his raw and edgy vocals that will capture any listener.
When listening to Leon’s cover, you will get lost in his voice and will completely forget what song you are actually listening to, as he really has made a complete transition from the original. There is a slight dark and sinister atmosphere to Leon’s cover which will have you hooked on every harmony and rift, and with the array of pitches and levels in his voice, and the almost theatrical background sound, the whole creation is utterly beautiful, and I recommend you listen to it on repeat for a while to truly delve into every last sound, and to truly appreciate the beauty of this song.
Leon recorded his cover at the legendary Maida Vale Studios in London where some of the most infamous singers have recorded, and he completely stands amongst the rest with this captivating cover, and I seriously give him props for taking this track on, because as an emerging artist, you have to be confident when covering such an iconic song as it could go either way with listeners, but it is safe to say Leon has taken a very large gigantic step in the right direction.
This works very well in his favour, as Leon will also be dropping his debut EP River Full of Liquor via his own label Skitzophonic Records on July the 7th, which should carry him on to a rather promising second half of 2014, and I am very excited for what is next, so I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for Kent hailing Leon Else.
