Lifetime has committed to a ten episode order for American Princess, a light drama created, written, and executive produced by Jamie Denbo. Auteur Jenji Kohan executive produces alongside Tara Herrmann.
American Princess follows Amanda, a socialite whose wedding plans are ruined when she discovers her fiancé’s infidelities hours before the ceremony. In a rage, she runs away to the countryside, finding herself stranded in the middle of a Renaissance Faire. Making news headlines, and in the middle of a nervous breakdown, Amanda reevaluates her life, only to become a part of the faire.
If the masterminds behind the project are anything to go by, the series is going to be one to watch. Jenji Kohan alone has become one of the most prolific artists in the industry, most gratuitous to Orange Is The New Black. As an executive producer, she helped GLOW to glory, allowing for its season renewal.
Jamie Denbo, who starred as Shelly Ginsberg on Kohan’s Oitnb, makes a significant step up the TV ladder with this project. Kohan will likely provide a great source of inspiration for the now creator and writer. Tara Herrmann has worked alongside Kohan on Weeds, Oitnb, and GLOW, so I don’t think creative differences will ever be an issue.
Head of Programming at Lifetime Liz Gateley said of the project that “Jenji has always taken interesting and unconventional worlds and given them heart and humor,” and in the hands of “Jenji, Jamie and Tara…we know this will be hilarious and special.” It certainly seems that Jenji is being credited with much of the work for this project due to her name, and she’ll certainly act as mother for the piece.
American Princess certainly seems an original concept, and stands out among what has become the banality of TV. It joins Lifetime’s effort to deliver quality scripted series, the fourth after Unreal, Mary Kills People and You.
