Lil Nas X has shared a music video for his song “Panini”. It’s his first new clip since “Old Town Road” became this year’s summer hit.
“Panini” is taken from Lil Nas X’s recent EP titled 7, released shortly after the rapper’s viral country remix “Old Town Road” broke the record for the most weeks spent at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and has since been dethroned by Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”.
The video for “Panini” was directed by Mike Diva. Its futuristic style matches Lil Nas X’s MTV VMAs performance of the song and brings to mind scenes from Ridley Scott’s Bladerunner. The clip features Disney actress Skai Jackson, known for her roles in TV series Jessie and Bunk’d.
“Panini” uses samples from Nirvana’s “In Bloom”, taken from the iconic 1991 album Nevermind. The rapper has recently disclosed that the song was approved by Kurt Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean.
In an interview for SiriusXM, Lil Nas X said: “I put out the snippet [of “Panini”] and everyone was like, ‘Wow, he’s sampling Nirvana.’ I was like, ‘Where? I’m not sampling Nirvana, this beat doesn’t have Nirvana in it.’ Then, I listened to ‘In Bloom’ in full, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay’”.
“I actually heard from Kurt’s daughter. She’s the one who pretty much approved the song and she told me how much she loved the video for ‘Old Town Road’ and stuff … It actually got me into the album for the first time. I had never heard ‘Nevermind’”.
