London-based singer and songwriter Marie Naffah is being tipped as ‘one to watch’ by the NME, alongside recent support from the likes of The Independent and The Line of Best Fit, among others.
She opens up her new year with a brand new single titled “I Want More” and an accompanying music video, which is set to lead into her sophomore EP titled Trains arriving in the summer. The music vide also comes with an experiential website for fans to engage with Marie’s handwritten lyrics, voicenotes, curated playlists and self-loving resolutions.
The cinematic track sees Naffah at her frankest yet in terms of her songwriting, with her soulful voice and vivid storytelling capturing the listener from the start.
Speaking about the inspiration behind “I Want More”, Marie Naffah says, “Although the song initially screens as a love song, the song for me is actually about wanting to feel the magic of live music again. I wanted to get really intimate and into the nitty-gritty of that. The song is all about electricity, really – it’s a nod to all the cables and amps – it was about wanting to really buzz again.
It’s about losing a spark and wanting to find it and refusing to settle for ‘fine’. I think the beauty of the song is that it can be applicable to so many other things – better relationships, better careers, taking more risks, more adventures. I want this song to dare people to dream, begging the question – what do you want more of?”
About the music video, she adds that, “I wanted the music video to reflect the day-dreaming quality of the track. So while the verses are about boredom, the choruses are shot against fabricated images to reflect the imagination. The director had the cool idea of having the green-screen images disappear right at the end so you get that ‘and-I-woke-up-and-it-was-all-a-dream’ feeling which I really liked“.
