Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott are starring in Sanctuary, a thriller directed by Zachary Wigon (The Heart Machine) and written by Micah Bloomberg (co-creator of Amazon’s Homecoming).
The film will unfold over the course of a single evening. Qualley plays a dominatrix, with Abbott as her wealthy client Hal. Following the death of his father, Hal stands to inherit both his position and vast fortune, so he decides to break things off with his leather-clad mistress. But his attempts to sever their ties don’t go exactly to plan, and things end in disaster.
David Lancaster and Stephanie Wilcox of Rumble Films are producing. Production has been kept impressively close to the vest, as according to Variety, filming has already wrapped in New York. The benefits of making a film with only two characters!
Wigon’s The Heart Machine was an impressive indie, a strange mix of romance, psychological thriller, and mystery, and it sounds like Sanctuary may look to tackle universal themes in a unique way once again. This will be his first film since that was released in 2014.
Both Qualley and Abbott are upcoming stars. Qualley was seen in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Seberg in 2019, and My Salinger Year in 2020.
She will play the lead in Netflix’s upcoming drama series Maid, and will soon begin production on Claire Denis‘ next film, a romantic thriller titled Stars At Noon opposite Taron Egerton.
Abbott had a great 2020, starring in Possessor, Black Bear and The World To Come.
He’ll next be seen in Jerrod Carmichael‘s festival darling On The Count Of Three, while he’s also got a supporting role in John Michael McDonagh‘s upcoming film, The Forgiven. He’s also signed on to star in Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Poor Things alongside Emma Stone.
There’s no release date confirmed for Sanctuary yet, but with production wrapped, news shouldn’t be too far away.
