Mark Ruffalo & Catherine Keener Join Ryan Reynolds In ‘The Adam Project’ | Film News

It was just a few days ago that the Ryan Reynolds‘ Netflix film The Adam Project added two big names in the form of Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldana.

Now, they’ve added two more. Mark Ruffalo and Catherine Keener have also signed on to join the film, which is being directed by Shawn Levy.

The film is a sci-fi adventure with Reynolds starring as a man who travels back in time to get help from his 13-year-old self. Together, they have to find their late father, who is now the same age as Reynolds, and set things right in order to save the future.

Ruffalo will play the dad, a brilliant physicist, while Keener will play the antagonist of the film, a woman who has stolen powerful technology from him.

The film was originally set up at Paramount, but became one of a handful of films Netflix bought the rights to this year after studios were stuck figuring out how to move forward during the coronavirus pandemic. It’s easy to see the appeal of this as a Back To The Future-type adventure, and Netflix might have snagged a gem here, especially now with this impressive cast.

In a normal year, we would have already seen Levy and Reynolds’ first collaboration, the comedy Free Guy. However that film has been repeatedly delayed. After multiple date shuffles, it was supposed to arrive in December, before 20th Century Studios removed it from their release calendar entirely, so who knows when we’ll see it. It might be another case of selling to a streamer.

Ruffalo recently starred in HBO’s limited series I Know This Much Is True, which won him an Emmy. Keener’s next project is a voice role in Dreamworks’ Croods 2, which coincidentally also stars Reynolds.

That movie is a rarity that’s actually opening in cinemas this week. She also has another project at Netflix in the works; a role in Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion‘s upcoming series, Brand New Cherry Flavor.
