Despite his character’s death in Avatar (2009), Corporal Lyle Wainfleet actor Matt Gerald is reportedly set to return in the upcoming sequels. How he’ll return is a mystery but director/producer/writer/probably-even-caterer James Cameron is full of marvel, with plenty of magic up his sleeves.

Gerald returns alongside original cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang, and Sigourney Weaver, whose character also died in the original. Dr. Grace Augustine was last seen wearing away on the forest floor, but Weaver is instead set to return to the sequels in a new role. Perhaps Gerald will also be tackling a different character.

Since appearing in Avatar, Gerald has enjoyed a number of action roles, namely in G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) and San Andreas (2015). He also has a recurring role as Melvin Potter in the Marvel’s Daredevil, on Netflix.

Production on Avatar 2 begins this fall, though Peter Jackson’s New Zealand based visual effects team have already begun work on all four sequels. 20th Century Fox recently announced that “the journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025,” allowing for plenty anticipation toward the upcoming saga that expands James Cameron’s epic.
