Melissa McCarthy & Ben Falcone To Star In Netflix Comedy Series ‘God’s Favorite Idiot’ | TV News

On the heels of recent HBO Max comedy Superintelligence, comedy couple Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are teaming up once again, this time for a comedy series at Netflix titled God’s Favorite Idiot.

The show follows a mid-level tech support employee Clark Thompson who finds love with co-worker Amily Luck at the exact same time he becomes the unwitting messenger of God. It kind of sounds like Bruce Almighty but with more of a romcom spin. Netflix has already ordered sixteen episodes that will likely be delivered in two blocks.

McCarthy and Falcone briefly worked together on Bridesmaids, which was McCarthy’s breakout role, earning her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Since then the couple has collaborated on Tammy, The Boss, and Life Of The Party. They also have another Netflix project in the works, the superhero comedy Thunder Force which also stars Octavia Spencer.

McCarthy and Falcone will executive produce the series via their On The Day banner, which they began in 2013. Since he’s in front of the camera this time, Falcone will delegate directorial duties to Michael McDonald, who previously worked with the couple on the series, Nobodies.

With traditional studios practically abandoning comedy films, streaming platforms like Netflix are pretty much the only place a comedy star like McCarthy can go now. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see her sign an Adam Sandler-esque deal at some point. She’ll next be seen in upcoming star-studded limited series Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu.
