Netflix, having cornered the market on practically everything else, are now getting into superhero movies. It was a huge reason why they signed comic book guru Mark Millar, the creator of Kingsman and Kick-Ass, to a major deal, and it’s no surprise they’ve acquired two big stars for their first superhero feature.
Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer have signed on to star in the streaming platform’s upcoming superhero comedy, Thunder Force. Ben Falcone, a frequent collaborator with his wife McCarthy on films such as Tammy and The Boss, will direct from his own screenplay.
Plot details are mostly under wraps, so there’s nothing to report regarding who the duo will be playing. It may be a pair of superheroes, or a hero-villain combo, or something entirely different. Falcone and McCarthy’s recent collaborations haven’t exactly lit the world on fire, but with a genre to satire, and Netflix willing to give them total freedom, maybe this can turn into something great.
It’s a great time for McCarthy and Spencer to team up, as both are coming off excellent awards seasons. McCarthy received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for her starring role in the drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?, while Spencer was a producer on Green Book, which won Best Picture. She also has an acting Oscar on her mantel for her role in 2011’s The Help.
Both are continuing their dramatic runs, as Spencer will next star in the Blumhouse thriller Ma, while McCarthy has a role in New Line’s ensemble crime drama, The Kitchen. Falcone’s next film is a comedy titled Superintelligence, and stars James Corden and Brian Tyree Henry. After all that, they will reconvene for Thunder Force, and we’ll see what Netflix can do with a superhero movie.
