A24 is reuniting with The Green Knight director David Lowery for Mother Mary, and has already secured Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway for the lead roles.
Lowery will direct from his own script, which will be an epic pop melodrama that follows a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer. Topic Studios is co-financing with A24.
Hathaway will play the musician, with Coel portraying the fashion designer. Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX will write and produce original songs for the film, which will also contain an original score composed by Daniel Hart.
This marks the third collaboration between A24 and Lowery following the aforementioned Green Knight and A Ghost Story. A24 will handle the global release of the film, which will be filmed in Germany.
Lowery’s unique style should make audiences expect the unexpected, perhaps something closer to Neon’s 2018 dark pop star-related film Vox Lux, which starred Natalie Portman.
This is a great role for Coel, who is best known for starring in, creating, writing, directing, and producing acclaimed British miniseries I May Destroy You, which was the most critically beloved series of 2020. She was also previously the driving force behind the series Chewing Gum, and was recently seen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
This should be the start of a great career for her in Hollywood. Hathaway has already had a busy 2023, with her most recent film Eileen premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. She also has both Mother’s Instinct with Jessica Chastain and Amazon film The Idea of You arriving later this year.
This announcement is coming before Lowery’s latest film has even been released. He’s already finishing directing fantasy adventure Peter Pan & Wendy, which stars Jude Law, Alan Tudyk, Molly Parker, and Yara Shahidi, and hits Disney+ on Friday, April 28.
There’s no word on when Mother Mary will begin production. Expect it to be yet another buzzy A24 release when it eventually arrives.
