Michelle Daly, an Irish singer-songwriter and musician based in Berlin, is set to enchant audiences with her new single “My Mama Told Me,” released on November 17. This song is a precursor to her much-awaited album January Skies, scheduled for release in February 2024.
“My Mama Told Me” is a harmonious blend of various genres, including pop, funk, soul, jazz, and rhythm & blues, with Daly weaving her personal story into a tribute to classic RnB and soul.
Speaking about the track, Michelle says, “This song reflects my journey in the music and performing arts industry. It talks about the relentless struggles, rejections, and uncertainties that artists frequently face, and yet, we persist, driven by our childhood dreams.” She adds, “My mother’s unwavering support, reassuring me that things will work out, inspired the song’s theme and its old-style R&B feel, reminiscent of Bill Withers.”
Michelle Daly is known for her diverse musical prowess, ranging from soul and jazz to opera. Her upcoming debut album, January Skies, was initially softly released on Bandcamp and Vinyl, earning a spot in ‘The Irish Times’ Best Albums of 2022′ shortlist.
The album, a product of a successful crowdfunding campaign, was recorded at Jazzanova Recording Studio in Berlin, in collaboration with Australian composer Michael Edwards, known for his work with Morcheeba and the Game of Thrones soundtrack. Previous singles from the album, including “January Skies,” “In My Dreams,” “Missed Chances,” and “Raven,” have received acclaim, featuring on playlists such as RTE Radio One Recommended and BBC Radio Ulster.
Daly’s songwriting is influenced by the musical giants of the 60s and 70s, with a touch of 90s trip-hop and neo-soul. January Skies explores themes of finding purpose, confronting patriarchy, dealing with lost faith, fate, and the contrast between fantasy and reality.
Before moving to Berlin, Daly was active in London’s music scene, where she released her debut EP Melodramas in 2014. She is also recognized for her opera performances, having sung at prestigious venues like the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.
The digital release of January Skies this winter is eagerly anticipated, accompanied by a full promotional tour, showcasing Michelle Daly’s unique blend of classical training and contemporary musical influences.
