Morena Baccarin Joins Gerard Butler In Thriller ‘Greenland’ | Film News

Morena Baccarin (Deadpool) has signed on to join Gerard Butler in STXfilms’ disaster-thriller, Greenland. The film revolves around a family’s fight for survival in the face of a cataclysmic natural disaster.

Ric Roman Waugh is directing, while Chris Sparling has penned the script, with revisions by Waugh and Mitchell LaFortune. Waugh and Butler previously collaborated on Angel Has Fallen, the follow-up to Butler’s successful Olympus Has Fallen/London Has Fallen franchise. That film hits cinemas Friday, August 23 and co-stars Morgan Freeman and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Greenland previously had Chris Evans and Neill Blomkamp attached, before they left for other projects. It’s currently unclear what role Baccarin will be playing. Hopefully she’s not reduced to playing a nothing role such as Butler’s wife, as is often the case in many of these rote action films.

Principal photography was originally slated for Toronto in May, but was pushed back for a number of reasons. Filming now kicks off next week. We’ll wait and see if Greenland is discernible from the other Butler-led action films that have arrived this decade, such as Den Of Thieves, Hunter Killer, and Geostorm.
