Sandman creator Neil Gaiman has been talking about who he can imagine playing his creation and we’re not overly surprised with his picks. With Joseph Gordon-Levitt developing the movie over at Warner Bros, and Gaiman taking a hands-on approach in his involvement, the film finally seems to be getting off the ground now that we’re speculating over casting. While never confirmed, it was rumoured that Gordon-Levitt himself would play the title character but Gaiman has been speaking to Badass Digest about possible leading men;
“It’s a funny thing with Morpheus. Again, it’s that thing where you look around and think, ‘Yes this person would be a fantastic person’, and then time passes. There was a time Johnny Depp would’ve been a great Morpheus, but now he’s too old and it’s fine. I think the first time I saw Benedict (Cumberbatch) was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s incredibly Morpheus’. And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up…Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off”.
Johnny Depp was a slight surprise but we can’t quite imagine the project as it is would be able to afford such a huge name in Hollywood, however if we mix his Jack Sparrow with a slightly darker persona, he could totally play it off. With Benedict Cumberbatch officially taking the role of Doctor Strange, we’re not sure he’s got the time to play Sandman and the fear of over using the brilliant Benedict still haunts us. We can totally see Tom Hiddleston taking on this awesome role, his performance in Only Lovers Left Alive saw him take on a much darker role and he completely smashed it! There’s still room for Gordon-Levitt to take on the role and considering he’s helming the project, there’s still time for him yet.
