With the success of all the recent documentaries on serial killers, Netflix is not resting on its laurels and their latest offering The Sons Of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness is set to be released on May 5, with the streaming platform sharing the official trailer this week.
This new docu-series will examine a theory saying that the infamous Son of Sam killer, David Berkowitz, didn’t act alone in the murder spree which began in New York City in 1976. According to the NYPD, Berkowitz was responsible for the murder of six people.
It will mostly investigate the work of Maury Terry, a journalist that has been trying to prove that Berkowitz wasn’t the only killer. He published the book The Ultimate Evil: An Investigation Into America’s Most Dangerous Satanic Cult that inspired the series. According to Maury Terry, Berkowitz couldn’t have been the sole perpetrator and he is convinced that these serial killings were a part of a bigger picture.
The series will include news footage from the time of the murders (the end of ’70s), some interviews with people who were close to the investigation, and of course, Terry’s finding and testimonials. In the trailer, we can see Terry, but as he passed away in 2015 there will be no recent footage.
The Sons of Sam is directed by Joshua Zeman (Cropsey, Murder Mountain), and it will be a four-part series with 60-minutes episodes.
Zeman’s first idea for that series came in 2009 when he was making his documentary Cropsey which had some material linked to the Son of Sam case.
To the Rolling Stone, Zeman said “Originally, I thought the rumors were nothing more than a Satanic Panic, but that’s when two NYPD detectives sat me down to tell me a story. They said there was far more to the Son of Sam case than the public knew. They told me to read Maury terry’s book Ultimate Evil – which both fascinated and scared the shit out of me“.
He also declared that he wanted the series to challenge the accepted theory – which led to the conviction of Berkowitz alone – and revealed the people of power that led to that conclusion at the cost of other evidence.
Bad decisions had been made and evidence had been missed leaving holes in the investigation, but maybe now this docu-series will be able to convince more people about this theory and change history.
