Starting the year with a bang, Nigerian-American R&B singer-songwriter Lekan was named to Spotify’s 2024 R&B Artists to Watch class. Now, he releases his highly-anticipated debut EP, So You Know, through Human Re-Sources, from which title track “So You Know” has caught our attention.
The six-track EP is a blend of soulful melodies and uplifting beats. It tells stories of resilience and loyalty. With smooth vocals over a slow-burning beat, So You Know shows Lekan’s skill in creating R&B that feels timeless and fresh.
Lekan explains that So You Know is an ode to his hometown in Columbus, Ohio. The title reflects his experiences with people not understanding him or even how to pronounce his name [lei-con]. He says, “Don’t wait to get to where you are going to appreciate where you’ve been.”
“My city definitely influenced me in helping me develop my resiliency,” Lekan shares. “Growing up, I didn’t see many people chasing their dreams, especially in music. This EP is a beautiful introduction to me – both sonically and creatively. It paints the picture of where I’m from, how far I’ve come, and where I’m heading. I want to show others from Columbus that it’s possible.”
Ahead of the EP release, Lekan announced he will join fellow Nigerian singer Tems on her Born In The Wild tour this Fall 2024. This tour will be a significant milestone for Lekan, bringing his music to a wider audience.
Lekan’s music is influenced by legends like Marvin Gaye, D’Angelo, and The Weeknd. His songs explore love, heartache, and joy with deep emotion. His background in playing instruments like drums, piano, and violin adds to the rich musicality of his records.
His debut TV performance on The Tamron Hall Show with Vic Mensa and the success of his single “Familiar” highlight his growing impact. The single, a collaboration with Grammy-winner Bongo ByTheWay, has surged in popularity, charting in the top 25 on R&B radio.
Lekan’s journey from promising talent to an influential voice in R&B is clear. Supporting Vic Mensa on a North American tour and gaining over 2 million streams in 2023, Lekan’s influence in the genre is undeniable.
He has received support from major platforms like Rolling Stone, Uproxx, Sirius XM, and VIBE. His music has been featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds R&B and Apple Music’s New In R&B playlists. Lekan has also written songs with artists like Halle Bailey, RAYE, and Jeremih.
