Sony have announced that West Side Story actress, Ariana DeBose, will appear in their latest Spider-verse movie, Kraven the Hunter.
The Broadway star rose to fame for her portrayal of Anita in Stephan Speilberg’s West Side Story last year. Due to her outstanding performance she won Best Supporting Actress at the 2022 SAG awards, and has gained an Oscar nomination in the same category.
DeBose has been cast as Calypso in the upcoming Sony film, a voodoo priestess who uses magic to control people’s minds and perform resurrections. The villainess was first introduced in Marvel Spider-Man comics in the 1980s as Kraven’s lover.
The Oscar-nominated actress will play alongside Aaron-Taylor Johnson (The Avengers), who has been cast as Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Hunter. Sony have also announced that Russell Crowe (Gladiator), Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus) will play supporting roles in the film.
Not to be confused as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kraven the Hunter belongs to Sony’s Spider-verse. Following the success of Vemon (2018), Sony have expanded their Spider-man characters through Morbuis, with Jared Leto playing the villainous vampire.
The film is set to premiere March 10th 2022. Now Kraven the Hunter becomes Sony’s third Spider-Man villain production to date, and will be released on January 23, 2023.
