Pussy Riot have announced a new EP named Panic Attack. As a preview of the upcoming release, they are also sharing a music video for the bold new single “Sexist” featuring fellow Russian rapper Hofmannita.
Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist protest punk rock and performance group founded in Moscow in 2011. The group’s lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to the Russian government, its policies and its links to the Russian Orthodox Church.
“Sexist” is the second single the punk group is sharing from the upcoming EP, following their previous bold track “Toxic“ in collaboration with Dorian Electra and 100 gecs’ Dylan Brady.
Produced by White Punk and Count Baldor, “Sexist” is a dark electro-pop hip hop song. It is written fully in Russian and can be described as a feminist manifest dedicated to International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8.
The song talks about abuse and rape, with Pussy Riot and Hofmannita turning their feelings on such sensitive but actual topics into a fictional story of a heroine being invited to a hotel room by male governmental official. Then after being harassed and unable to escape, she murders the rapist in self-defense as a result. The NSFW music video for the fresh song is directed by Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, the leader of the punk group.
In her lines, Nadezhda sings: “No means no, rapist is worse than a cop“. According to Tolokonnikova, the video serves as a step to inverse the flow of patriarchal culture. She states:”Instead of women and queer people being objectified and serving as furniture, we use sexist pigs as furniture. The video does not encourage to oppress anyone, but rather satirically highlights arbitrary and absurd nature of any oppression“.
In their press release, Pussy Riot claimed that they will spend the rest of the year working on a new full-length album. We wish them all the best in this process and can’t wait till their new EP is released!
