Ah, The Razzies. Ostensibly the anti-Oscars, in reality a mean spirited, desperate attempt for celebrity recognition and attention. Whether a true piling-on over the worst films of the year is truly needed is debatable, but at least if the actual worst films of the year were nominated that would be something.
Instead, The Razzies (or Golden Raspberry Awards, pick your least unsophisticated name) mostly ignore the myriad of poorly edited, horribly constructed indies that are released every year in favour of simply nominating the most popular film to hate. This year it’s Batman v Superman, and you can guarantee a nomination for the next Transformers film next year right now, before anyone has even seen it.
Maybe the worst thing to happen to the ceremony was Sandra Bullock turning up to receive her award in person for worst actress in 2009, which somewhat validated the nomination process of trying to be noticed and become relevant above all else. In fact, it’s not even a requirement for ‘members’ to actually have seen any of the films nominated.
It’s ironic that I’m reporting on The Razzies despite my loathing for their obvious bait of picking easy targets, so I guess they’ve succeeded. Much like they ‘succeeded’ when they previously nominated films such as Heaven’s Gate, The Blair Witch Project and Battlefield Earth as worst picture of the their respective years (ok maybe they were spot on about Battlefield Earth).
