Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell have signed on to star in an untitled wedding comedy for Amazon Studios. Nick Stoller will write and direct the project, while Witherspoon and Ferrell will also produce under their respective banners, Hello Sunshine and Gloria Sanchez.
Most of the plot is still under wraps, but sources say the premise will revolve around two weddings that are booked at the same venue on the same weekend. Amazon reportedly landed the rights to the film in a competitive situation that involved both streamers and studios.
Stoller is a comedy veteran, having previously directed films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and both Neighbors movies. His next project is highly anticipated gay romantic comedy Bros, which he also co-wrote with star Billy Eichner. That’s due out in September.
Witherspoon has shifted to more of a producer in recent years, developing projects like Gone Girl, Lucy In The Sky and the upcoming adaptation of Where The Crawdads Sing.
She’s also starred in more TV projects like Apple’s The Morning Show and Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere. Although she is returning to her romcom roots with upcoming Netflix film Your Place Or Mine.
Ferrell’s Gloria Sanchez has also produced successful films such as Booksmart, Eurovision, Hustlers, and Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar in recent years.
He’ll next be seen in Apple TV+ Christmas comedy Spirited opposite Ryan Reynolds, voice a key role in animated comedy Strays, and is currently filming the role of CEO of Mattel for Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie.
