It has been 11 years since we saw the painfully awkward diarist on the silver screen and although rumours of a follow up to Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason have been floating around for almost 7 years, this is the first time we have seen something solid from the production. A still from the production of the third Bridget Jones film, Bridget Jones’s Baby, shows leading lady Renée Zellweger experiencing anything but the joys of motherhood as she crowd-surfs at a festival, clad in wellies and covered in mud.
In 2013, the future of Bridget Jones took a dark turn when novelist Helen Fielding penned her third Bridget Jones book, Mad About The Boy. This novel saw the stony Mark Darcy, Bridget’s husband, killed off and his grieving widow left to raise their two children alone. However, praise be to Fielding, she decided to give Darcy a stay of execution for Bridget Jones’s Baby, which is a separate story set between The Edge of Reason and Mad About The Boy; so although Darcy will still be dying, it’s now a small fact that we can push to the back of our minds for this chapter.
As you may have guessed already while reading this, Renée Zellweger will be returning as Bridget Jones. Also returning is Colin Firth as her socially-awkward husband, Mark Darcy; Sally Phillips as Bridget’s friend ‘Shazza’; with Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones as Bridget’s parents. Also reportedly making a cameo will be Ed Sheeran, whose concert Bridget may be crowd-surfing to. The one glaring absence is Hugh Grant as the callous Daniel Cleaver, now replaced by Patrick Dempsey as a new character called Jack Qwant. Bridget Jones’s Baby is due for release September 16, 2016 and you can see the new image below.
