Bellah Mae, a budding pop singer, has finally released her long-awaited first track, “Boyfriend Of The Year.”
After a teaser of the song went viral on TikTok over the summer, “Boyfriend Of The Year” finally makes an appearance with its seductive genre mashup of pop punk, country, and plain old pop.
The song’s very sympathetic lyrics, which Bellah co-wrote with Josh Breaks, about seeing a toxic ex-boyfriend treat their new girlfriend with the respect they never offered you, were well received by the internet’s bereaved hearts.
Bellah’s unique writing approach, which embraces the storytelling conventions of country music and combines them with enormous pop hooks and a beautifully anthemic chorus that screams for the sing-along catharsis seen in early Alanis Morrisette and Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Good 4 U,” is at the heart of everything.
Bellah describes the track as follows: “I’d had the opening line of the chorus in my notes app for a few months, but I didn’t know which angle I wanted to take the song. Josh and I started trying out ideas and, in an hour, we had written the song.
It was one of those examples where it just writes itself. When I uploaded the song to TikTok, the response was so amazing and positive. I wrote it from my personal experiences, but the number of messages I’ve had from girls and guys sending me paragraphs about their situations is incredible. As a songwriter, it’s confirmation that I’m doing something right.”
With Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne as well as Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry as influences, Bellah’s songwriting initially leaned more towards country music.
Danny Nozell, the manager of Dolly Parton, was drawn to Bellah’s early music and invited her to participate in a concert series in Nashville and the UK. Danny Nozell has served as Bellah’s mentor.
