Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie must enjoy working together. Having already collaborated on Greta Gerwig‘s currently in-production Barbie movie, Gosling is now in talks to join Robbie in the previously announced Ocean’s Eleven prequel in development at Warner Bros.
Plot details are still mostly under wraps but the story is expected to take place in 1960s Europe. Jay Roach, who previously directed Robbie in Bombshell, is helming the film from a script written by Carrie Solomon. Robbie will also produce the film under her LuckyChap banner alongside Tom Ackerley and Michelle Graham.
The original 1960 Ocean’s Eleven film starred the Rat Pack, before it was rejigged by Steven Soderbergh into the 2001 film starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and more. That led to two sequels, also directed by Soderbergh.
2018 then saw the Sandra Bullock-led gender-swapped sequel Ocean’s Eight make almost $300 million worldwide and get mostly positive reviews, but it looks like any designs on a follow-up to that film are dead.
Gosling’s previous career decisions usually avoided big budget movies, but with this, Netflix’s The Gray Man (and it’s recently announced sequel) and Barbie, he seems to have changed his tune. Regardless of its Ocean’s connection, a 60s-set heist film starring Robbie and Gosling should be more than enough to get people interested.
The prequel is eyeing a Spring 2023 production start date. Barbie is expected to hit cinemas July 21, 2023.
