Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh have signed on to star in Mayday, an action-adventure film in development at Skydance and Apple Original Films. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, fresh off helming Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, will direct.
The project is reportedly based on an original pitch from Goldstein and Daley, who came to Skydance earlier this year with the idea. They had been developing it prior to Apple’s involvement, with the script completed for some time, well before the WGA Strike began. The logline is being kept under wraps.
Reynolds started showing interest back in joining the film back in April, which is when Mayday started gaining serious momentum. A start date is still undetermined, but it seems likely that this could be the next thing Reynolds shoots.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce alongside Reynolds, Ashley Fox, Johnny Pariseau, and Patrick Gooing for Maximum Effort.
The project will reunite Reynolds and Apple, who previously collaborated on Christmas musical comedy Spirited, which also starred Will Ferrell. Skydance also produced his Netflix sci-fi film The Adam Project.
Goldstein and Daley have proven to have a knack for combining action/adventure with comedy and wit. Their Dungeons & Dragons movie was a surprise hit, they previously directed the well-liked Game Night, and helped write the scripts for comedies such as Horrible Bosses and Vacation Friends.
Combined with Reynolds, they should be a good fit to make Mayday – whatever it’s about – an entertaining ride. Reynolds is currently filming Deadpool 3 for Marvel, and also has Paramount film Imaginary Friends hitting cinemas next year.
Branagh will next be seen in Christopher Nolan‘s much-anticipated Oppenheimer, while in September he’ll reprise his role as Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice, the latest installment in Disney’s Agatha Christie trilogy.
Just like its predecessors, Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile, Branagh will also direct.
