Saoirse Ronan has signed on to star in The Outrun, the newest film from German auteur Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher). The project is an adaptation of Amy Liptrot‘s memoir of the same name, covering her post-rehab return home to the sheep farm where she grew up after two decades away.
The book has been translated to more than a dozen languages, and was a Sunday Times bestseller in the UK where it sold over 110,000 copies. Fingscheidt and Liptrot have penned the adaptation together. Ronan said in a statement:
“It was Amy’s voice that first drew me to The Outrun. Her unusual way of seeing things in a way that perhaps you only can when you’ve been to the darkest place you can go within yourself. I have been waiting to play a part like this – the messiness, hopefulness, dreaminess, authenticity and humor we want to achieve – I’ve been scared of it, but with Nora I feel ready.”
Fingscheidt’s System Crasher received critical acclaim when it was released a few years ago, winning eight German Film Awards. That film tackled a nine-year old girl with severe behavioral problems with deep trauma, and it looks like The Outrun will see Fingscheidt return to similar themes. She said in her own statement:
“Amy’s intriguing and poetic story shows how one can find their lives broken into pieces, and that recovery can happen in the most unexpected of ways and places. There are wonderful gifts already in place to make this a powerful and immersive film.
One is the setting, the vast and cinematic landscapes of the Orkney islands; the other is our main actress, Saoirse Ronan, who brings magic to the screen with her unique mix of charisma and emotional depth!”
Fingscheidt recently directed Netflix drama The Unforgivable, which starred Sandra Bullock as a woman determined to find her sister after being released from prison.
Ronan last starred in romantic drama Ammonite and had a small role in Wes Anderson‘s The French Dispatch. She’ll next be seen in mystery film See How They Run and is currently filming sci-fi thriller Foe.
A release date has yet to be announced for The Outrun.
