With her time as Black Widow winding down – at least it will whenever that prequel finally arrives – Scarlett Johansson is shifting to some weirder genre work. She will star in Bride for A24, a genre-bender described as an indie thriller meets female-empowerment meets coming-of-age movie.
Johanssson will play the “perfect woman”, created in a laboratory by a domineering tech entrepreneur. When she discovers the truth about her creation and circumstances, she escapes his clutches, rejecting his romantic advances, and plunges into society to reckons with her new life. The catch is that she’s viewed by everyone as a monster.
Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Gloria) will direct the picture for A24 and Apple. It’s the latest project in their ongoing first look deal, which just gave us Sofia Coppola‘s On The Rocks last week. Lelio will co-write the film alongside Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo (Orange Is the New Black).
Johansson released a statement on the film, implying that it’s a somewhat modern take on Bride Of Frankenstein: “It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone. Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today”.
Johnasson has always been interested in playing roles that examine the idea of a “perfect woman”; think Under The Skin, Ghost In The Shell and Lucy. So her taking on this role makes perfect sense. Her last A24 movie was in fact Under The Skin, and if Bride is as memorable as that film, we’re in for something special.
