Monsters Inc and Big Hero 6 screenwriter Dan Gerson has tragically passed away aged 49 following a long battle with brain cancer. Writing an obituary in the New York Times, his family confirmed Gerson “died peacefully on 6 February at his home in Los Angeles after battling brain cancer”.
He began his career as a staff writer for the NBC sitcom Something So Right; but moved on to co-write 2001’s Monsters Inc with Andrew Stanton, plus its 2013 prequel Monsters University with Robrt L Baird and Dan Scanlon. Also, Gerson co-wrote 2014’s Big Hero 6 alongside Baird and Jordan Roberts.
His obituary read: “Daniel expressed a unique zest for life, its big and little moments, and brought that spirit to all of his loved ones. His sense of humour was exceptional. Beyond his creative talents, what distinguished Daniel was a profound commitment to honesty, fairness and concern for the less fortunate”.
It continued: “He was a fiercely loyal, loving and caring human being. The humanity, humour, and compassion that he brought to his writing, he brought to his family and friends in equal measure”. Donations can be made in his memory to the Brain Tumor Program at UCLA.
