Young Disney star Asher Angel is set to take on the lead role of Billy Batson/Captain Marvel/Shazam! in New Line’s upcoming Shazam! adaptation. He joins Mark Strong and recently announced Zachary Levi in the film which could launch Angel’s career beyond the realms of children’s TV.
Billy Batson is the protagonist of the Comics from which the film is adapted. A young boy, he can transform into an adult superhero by speaking the word “Shazam!”. Levi will star as this adult form.
David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) directs from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Angel’s involvement in Disney series Andi Mack has clearly indicated a dedication that will allow for this potential tentpole to be successful.
The project is heading toward a production start in early 2018.
