Sony Pulls ‘Silver & Black’ From Release Schedule To Re-Do The Script | Film News

There was brief panic over the weekend when, out of nowhere, Sony pulled upcoming superhero movie Silver & Black from their release schedule completely. The Marvel comics adaptation that would see the teaming up of female heroes Black Cat and Silver Sable was originally scheduled for a February 8, 2019 release, though hitting that date did seem unlikely as the film had yet to enter production.

With the studio pulling it completely, that set off some alarm bells that the project might be completely dead. Fortunately, that’s not the case. The studio and filmmakers are reportedly “going back to the drawing board” to start over and refine the project.

Collider spoke with director Gina Prince-Bythewood, where she explained that all parties involved want to make the film “as good as it can be”, even if that means waiting a little longer for the finished product:

“With Silver and Black, when you’re doing a film of that magnitude, it’s gotta be right. And if it’s not right, we actually collectively decided to go back to the drawing board and start over. That’s gonna take time. So obviously, I’d love to be shooting right now, but to be shooting something that I know is not as good as it can be, I’m not the type that wants to shoot something you’re rewriting as you’re shooting.

So, we have to get the script right, and I’m okay to wait. I may be shooting something before that, but it really is just get the script right before we go on that journey”.

Sony recruited Prince-Bythewood to helm the film last year, and back in February brought on board Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Chaos Walking scribe Lindsey Beer, who turned in a script for the director to polish.

So, it’s good news that the film is still alive and well. It makes sense to not rush into production with a half-finished script, and it’s probably a taxing job for writers to have to build a superhero universe of Spider-Man characters without Spider-Man himself, so giving them plenty of time to craft the world and the characters is a positive, even if it means the film won’t hit our eyeballs next February.

Silver & Black‘s new release date is yet to be confirmed, but its co-partner in Sony’s non-Spider-Man Spider-Man universe, Venom, is set to hit cinemas Friday, October 5.
