After she teases us with a a video of her demo “Quiet” about a year ago, emerging Barcelona artist Roca has delivered on her brand new debut single titled “Told Yourself A Lie“.
The single sees Roca battling what she is describing a internalised capitalism. According to the Spanish native, “I feel like we live in a world that doesn’t value true authenticity, because it’s messy and filled with contradictions. Instead, things are expected to follow a script that allows the consumption of palliative identity badges“.
On “Told Yourself A Lie”, Roca is challenging the idea that to be valuable, you have to produce, as she suggested that the notion that you have to create a comprehensive personal brand to justify or sustain self-expression, can drive any person insane.
Going deeper into how the single came about, Roca tells a story of how when she was growing tired of feeling like she must choose between being free and feeling supported, her sister and two of her best friends were going through a similar feeling of frustration in their romantic lives.
She adds that their boyfriends became cold-hearted because they refused to open up about their internal troubles, which they preferred to ignore. Like her friends who felt shut out of their relationships, Roca felt blanked out from a world not willing to accept that sometimes human nature isn’t supposed to be coherent and productive but rather messy and playful.
“Told Yourself A Lie” is Roca trying to give voice to their desperation, which in Roca’s case is directed at her own thoughts.
As for her background, Roca’s sound is birthed from her Latin music background and her stay in London, where she was the lead singer for punk band Puteros and indie dance band Park Hotel. She channels her inspiration into eclectic and danceable tunes, which she uses to shake off “everyday frustrations and reconnect with her own voice to resist a world overly concerned with productivity and sense-making in a senseless world“.
