Huddersfield Artist PENNY Shares Visuals For ‘Outside’ From ‘My Secret Powers’ EP

Huddersfield singer-songwriter PENNY makes her debut on our publication with her latest single titled “Outside” and its accompanying music video. The single is taken from her recently released debut EP My Secret Powers, which was released last week via Empty Streets Records / Because Music.

The 23-year old artist made her official debut last summer and has caught the attention of the likes of The Line of Best Fit and Notion Magazine, with her angelic voice and vulnerable songwriting. On her new EP, she tackles themes such as her dreams and ambition, queerness and mental health journey, over tracks that can best be described as gorgeous dream-pop ballads.

“Outside” sees PENNY in a poignant confessional mood as she sings about being tangled up in jealousy, and how sometimes, it can be mistaken for lust, over an indie-electronica backdrop, produced by her sole collaborator Will Serfass (aka WASSAILER), who also produced the rest of the EP.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the single and how it came together, PENNY said, “It feels like so long ago since I wrote Outside, but usually, when I write something, it’s because I need to find a way to process my emotions – it’s kind of like therapy to me. The song is all about jealousy, and how I became borderline obsessed with my ex’s ex.

I found myself wondering whether my jealousy towards her was actually lust – the whole “do I want to be you, or be with you?” thing. However, in writing the song and looking at the situation through an ‘outside’ perspective, I came to realise how ridiculous this was, and that I am really quite perfect just the way I am“.

“Outside” also comes with a music video created by experimental visual artist Eloise Shaw. The video features a surreal sequence of beautiful 3D animations taking you on a mind-bending, captivating journey. Speaking of the video, Eloise said: “Feeling like you’re always on the outside can leave you feeling deflated and unworthy but hopefully, this video shows that there can be beauty in the moments of solace and quiet”.
