There are still two months to go before Season 2 of Stranger Things premieres, but showrunners the Duffer Brothers are already making plans to pack up. When confirming that Stranger Things also has a Season 3 renewal, Ross Duffer commented “we’re thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out”.
I can hear hearts breaking everywhere. On one hand, it’s refreshing to see showrunners who want to end their show on a high rather than letting it die out unnecessarily. On the other, there’s still some time to go before even the third season, and who knows what could happen in the time in between.
Perhaps the announcement is a secret effort to get those Netflix soldiers off their heels. If they reveal that there’s not much longer to go, they’ll avoid the now famous and feared purging of the giant.
More understandably though, and less of a wishful conspiracy, is Ross’ point that they can’t be “constantly running their child stars through the Upside-Down wringer”. Kids grow up, and to have “something bad happening to them once a year” would indeed be ridiculous. It’s not The Simpsons, there’s no magic that can halt the aging process and keep kids young forever (shut up, Peter Pan).
In the end, Ross exclaims, “they’re going to have to get the fuck out of this town!”
For now, Stranger Things returns to Netflix on October 27 for Season 2. Enjoy it while it lasts.
