Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are teaming up for a currently untitled romantic comedy in the works at Sony. Genre veteran Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) will direct. Plot details are under wraps, but the project is based on Ilana Wolpert‘s script, which Gluck is reportedly rewriting.
Gluck (whose Olive Bridge Entertainment has a first-look deal at Sony) is producing alongside Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, with Sweeney executive producing for Fifty-Fifty Films.
According to Deadline, Sony landed the coveted package at the end of last year after figuring out Sweeney’s schedule with her Euphoria dates. Shooting is expected to begin at the end of next month.
This makes a lot of sense for Sweeney, who has already developed a strong relationship with Sony. She’s currently working on Sony/Marvel superhero film Madame Web, and she’s attached to star in both thriller The Registration and sci-fi remake Barbarella for the studio. Clearly Sony see her as a burgeoning star.
This move also makes sense for Powell, as his career took off a few years ago after starring in Netflix’s Set It Up alongside Zoey Deutch. He’s also coming off a big 2022 thanks to a key role in Top Gun: Maverick. He’s currently working on sci-fi thriller Deputy X for Universal and has signed on star in buddy comedy Foreign Relations alongside Nick Jonas.
This will be Gluck’s first romcom since the aforementioned Friends With Benefits. Since then he’s directed both Peter Rabbit films and spent time working on comedy shows such as Chicago Party Aunt and Sneakerheads. He’s currently developing action comedy End of the World and a film adaptation of Just Dance.
