Euphoria breakout star Sydney Sweeney is set to executive produce and star in a remake of classic science fiction film Barbarella. The project is in development at Sony and is reportedly in the early stages of production.
The film will be based on the 1968 film of the same name, which itself was based on a series of French comic books by Jean-Claude Forest. The film starred Jane Fonda as Barbarella, a 41st-century space adventurer sent to find and stop an evil scientist who has created a weapon to destroy the human race.
The movie was not a huge hit upon its release, but has since become a cult classic among sci-fi fans, while also becoming somewhat infamous for its depictions of sexuality and nudity. There’s currently no details on whether this version will attempt to do the same.
There have been many attempts to reincarnate Barbarella on the screen. In 2014, a TV series was reportedly in pre-production and being shopped around at Amazon, but the project never came to fruition. Robert Rodriguez was also attached to direct a feature length remake in 2007, but it never got off the ground.
It will be interesting to see whether younger audiences are interested in a remake of a project they’ve likely barely (if at all) heard of, but Sweeney’s presence should help. Her star has only grown since Euphoria, and Sony clearly see her as a key player for them in the future, as this is one of many projects she has in development at the studio.
She joined the cast of superhero film Madame Web back in March, and will work with the studio again on dystopian thriller The Registration. She is also set to star in biopic about whistleblower Reality Winner and in thriller The National Anthem.
We’ll wait for more details regarding Barbarella, but it looks like it will be another big project for Sweeney, who it looks like will soon be big enough to no longer have “Euphoria breakout star” in front of her name.
