A South-Wales band is rewriting the rules of glam rock, going back to those times when music and outrageous self-expression were one. They are TELGATE and are spreading as much musical energy as possible, drawing on 70s rock and, at the same time, creating something from their eccentric creativity
The Cardiff band have launched “Cherrytight”. It’s just their first single, but they already seem to cut the edge. In recent months they have quickly developed a reputation in South Wales with a series of glamly eccessive shows across the region that have made it clear to the public that they were not like any other local band.
In the song, an angry riff starts playing followed by a restless drum, ready to frame the captivating show. The singer’s red painted lips begin singing sharply. Their style out of mind sets fire to all expectations. Their young faces run fast on the screen of their video clip, shining in the darkness where the instruments play hard. An isolated voice screams desperately a provocative lyric which doesn’t leave anything of unspoken behind itself.
As Casper James, vocalist of the band, explained: “The song is a poetic discussion of how the crisis which grieved the LGBTQ community was twisted to promote fear-mongering of homosexual and bisexual people and laid blame on our community“, adding that “The lyrics relate to the excessive marginalisation which came from the discriminative reactions that pushed the queer community into the shadows.”
Questioning with uncommon lucidity the perceptions of gender, sexuality and what music can be, they are now leaving an unique mark which makes the new era rock and roll scene more alive than ever.
