The behind-the-scenes saga of The New Mutants may end up being more interesting than the film. Consider this – the original trailer for Josh Boone‘s film arrived in October 2017. Days later it was reported that the film would potentially kick off a new trilogy of X-Men-related horror movies. Everything was looking rosy, until early 2018 brought the first delay, and things have been downhill ever since.
However, there’s some vague good news. Producer Simon Kinberg has confirmed that the plan is to complete the reshoots this year and aim to hit the movie’s new spring 2020 release date. In an interview with Digital Spy, Kinberg mentioned that the multiple delays were down to “necessary” reshoots.
That meant the cast had to be brought back together, which wasn’t easy, and things were then complicated further by Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Originally set to arrive in April 2018, The New Mutants has now become the face of a in-flux studio scrambling to save a film that may have been a complete disaster.
Kinberg also mentioned how Marvel has a much clearer process when scheduling and budgeting reshoots. He essentially admitted that Fox weren’t prepared, and were left scrambling.
“It would seem simple on The New Mutants because they’re maybe not as big movie stars as the main X-Men movies”, Kinberg said. “But all of them are on TV shows, so we’ve got to wait until they get off their shows and then they can all be in the same place at the same time”. This is often the reason you see MCU stars cancelling other projects.
Who knows how The New Mutants will eventually turn out? A March 2018 report speculated that 50% of the film will be reshot, which sounds absurd. Hopefully the final product can be salvaged.
