The Romantidote – (Have Yourself) A Very Maudlin Christmas!! | New Music

Scottish singer-songwriter Calum Bolland, aka The Romantidote, has recently revealed a new Christmas song titled “(Have Yourself) A Very Maudlin Christmas!!”. Bolland is a multi-faced performer with such music influences as Bob Dylan, the Magnetic Fields and Flight of the Conchords. The artist mixes various styles and topics in his songs, engaging themes of today’s debate, as well as more personal ones.

“(Have Yourself) A Very Maudlin Christmas!!” is the artist’s first Christmas song, a genre which includes eternal classics as well as original tracks with interesting beats and styles. “(Have Yourself) A Very Maudlin Christmas!!” surely belongs to the latter group, thanks to its catchy melody, which makes it difficult not to dance, and the singer’s warm vocals.

Beside its typically Christmassy and vital melody, the message conveyed by the song is not traditional at all. As the artist reveals, Christmas is not always, as common wisdom might insist, the most wonderful time of the year. In particular, the singer focuses on all the irritations facing us during the festive season, such as uncles with fascist leanings and the abundance of food and drink we are forced to consume.

The artist presents funny images and an ironic and original take on these situations. Despite his polemic view, the song ends with a redemptive moment, as the singer realizes that Christmas is at least a time of the year when we can enjoy and be surrounded by the ones we love.
