Toni Collette, Anna Faris and Thomas Haden Church have signed on to star in The Estate, a comedy from writer/director Dean Craig (Death At A Funeral). Signature Films’ Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel will produce, with Signature and Capstone Global financing the movie.
When Macey and Savanna see their Aunt Hilda’s terminal illness as an opportunity to get her inheritance and rescue their dying café, they plan to improve their bitter relationship and cater to Hilda’s needs. However, they find that they’re not the only ones with an eye on the fortune, with their cousins Beatrice and Richard coming up with the same plan.
A battle amongst the eclectic family commences as to who can impress the matriarch the most and come out on top. There’s definitely heavy Succession vibes here. The Estate looks like it might be a comedy-heavy version of a similar story, condensed into the length of a film.
The cast is also a great fit. Farris has always been an underrated comedy star, and Church has often excelled in dark comedies like this. Collette can practically play any role asked of her, so she’s a good fit for any project. Craig also has experience with dark comedy thanks to Death At A Funeral, so the hiring of everyone here feels spot on.
Goldberg said in a statement: “Dean’s knack for farce is one of a kind. We look forward to bringing this comedy to life and working with this extraordinary group of talent; Toni, Anna and Thomas couldn’t be more perfectly cast”.
Collette will next be seen in Guillermo Del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley, while this will be Faris’ first big screen role since 2018’s Overboard.
She’s been spending most of her time starring in sitcom Mom, which concluded this year. Church was last seen in historical drama The 24th, and will reprise his role as Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home later this month.
