The second single from accomplished Americana/Roots-Rock singer-songwriter Ryan Wayne‘s upcoming debut album of the same name, “Crow Amongst the Sparrows,” has just been released.
Ryan Wayne is best known as one of the two spark plugs that ignited the award-winning, beloved Toronto band Warped 45s.
His new single “Crow Amongst the Sparrows,” is a hazily described account of a blossoming romance that lopes along while describing an unhurried but undeniable attraction.
The song’s enigmatic atmosphere is evoked by the sonically enhanced guitar textures, easygoing tempo, and lean in close to hear the vocals. There is a woman in Manhattan waiting tables, blowing smoke, and casting shadows on her bed, but not much else is known about her.
Ryan was raised in the musical environment in the working-class community of Oshawa, which is located just east of Toronto. Ryan spent many summer evenings singing with aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and friends at the family cabin in the Madawaska Valley. Ryan’s father is a truck driver who writes songs.
Ryan has had the chance to travel the world performing alongside musicians like The Drive By Truckers, The Skydiggers, Elliott Brood, Deer Tick, The Once, and Justin Rutledge.
Ryan has also collaborated on recordings with a variety of musicians, including Dan Mangan on “Road Regrets,” a track from the seminal album Nice, Nice, Very Nice.
“Crow Amongst the Sparrows” started as a peculiar dream featuring the ghost of Leonard Cohen and a faceless stranger, shifting whimsically between cities, timeframes, and perspectives. The finer details were mostly gone come morning…
Nut the lyrical imagery for the song was born from the fragments of that dream, sprawled first in ink on a napkin, early morning in a coffee shop in Brampton, Ontario. It was all very stream-of-consciousness. The music and melody came later and tried to follow that same confused dreaminess“, says the artist about his creation.
