Clearly, Transparent is doing very well, as Amazon has renewed the show for its fifth season, before Season 4 has even premiered, cementing it as Amazon’s longest running series. The show follows the Pfefferman family’s journey of discovery and acceptance as their father Mort (Jeffrey Tambor) comes out as transgender, now leading life as Maura.
Creator Jill Soloway said of the renewal “we are extremely grateful to Amazon Studios for their continued trust and support and to our audience for their warm embrace of the Pfeffermans…we look forward to another season of comedy and drama, love and weirdness, God and sex – in the service of community and in pursuit of peace, joy, freedom and human rights for all.”
The show certainly provides a platform for conversation on gender rights, and this upcoming season is said to be even more “political”, challenging views amidst Donald Trump‘s issuing of the transgender military ban.
Transparent’s critical acclaim has no doubt contributed to Amazon’s easy decision to renew the series; the first Amazon produced show to win a major award, to date, Transparent’s record includes two Golden Globes and eight Emmys. Tambor alone has been very well received and has earned back-to-back Emmys for his portrayal of Maura. The show is up for five awards at next month’s ceremony.
The main cast – Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, and Amy Landecker – is said to all be returning for the fifth season. Soloway and Andrea Sperling will continue to executive produce.
Season 4 of Transparent hits Amazon on September 22, and sees Maura heading to Israel before making a startling discovery. Season 5 will be both produced and released in 2018. Until then.
