UK Eurovision Entry ‘Space Man’ Hits #2 Spot On UK Official Singles Chart

After reaching the runner-up place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, Sam Ryder’s successful journey looks far from being over. His single “Space Man” charted at number 2 on the Official UK Singles Chart released on Friday 20th of May, coming second only to Harry Style’s “As It Was”.

Two is definitely my lucky number“, said Ryder while chatting with Scott Mills on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show last Friday. “Space Man” was released on 22/02/2022, he was performing as 22nd at the Eurovision, where he made history by reaching 2nd place. It is the best result for a UK Eurovision entry since 1998.

Sam Ryder, the singer-songwriter from Essex, became popular on TikTok during the 2020 lockdown, performing covers of great artists like Alicia Keys and Justin Bieber. For their performance in Turin, Ryder brought Eurovision’s fans to space, with his powerful vocal delivery, a unique lightning stage set and his heartfelt lyrics about how he would feel if he was an astronaut, set to leave planet Earth.

If I was an astronaut, I’d be floating in mid-air” is the song opening, and Sam Ryder has made for sure, UK’s fans float with joy as the jury votes were coming, putting him in the first position before public voting was added.

Eurovision is all about unity, peace, love togetherness, inclusivity and expression”, said Ryder to Eurovision’s host Alessandro Cattelan during the show, showing that Eurovision values are shared also by UK artists.

It’s been a huge ride for UK’s delegation in Turin and Sam Ryder’s success has hopefully paved the way for a bright future in the next Eurovision editions. Without any doubt, Sam Ryder has a very bright future ahead, as his European tour ‘There’s Nothing But Space, Man’ is set to start in Autumn later this year and few dates are already sold out.
