Universal Drops First Trailer For Bittersweet Drama ‘Our Friend’ | Film Trailer

Universal has released the first trailer for Our Friend, the upcoming drama starring Dakota Johnson, Casey Affleck, and Jason Segel.

Based on Matt Teague‘s Esquire article ‘The Friend: Love is Not a Big Enough Word’, the film revolves around a man who moves in with his best friend and her husband after she is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The article made the rounds a few years ago and is a devastating yet heartwarming tale of platonic love during the hardest of times. If the film captures the same emotions that Teague’s writing did, Our Friend will probably have most of its audience weeping throughout.

The trailer above gives the film a bit more of a dramedy tinge, at least at the start, which isn’t surprising considering Segel’s involvement. Teague’s article does a great job capturing the real humans behind the story, who still laugh and love even in the darkest times, and it looks like the film has taken that idea to heart.

The film is directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and originally debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2019, before Roadside Attractions and Gravitas Ventures picked up the distribution rights.

It will be released in cinemas and on demand January 22, 2021, right in time for awards season. Considering the subject matter and the odd year it’s been for movies, Our Friend could end up being a real contender, especially in performance categories.
