Vince Vaughn To Star In Stephen Chbosky Comedy ‘Nonnas’

Vince Vaughn has signed on to star in Nonnas, a new comedy from author/director Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Susan Sarandon, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Linda Cardellini, Drea De Matteo, and Joe Manganiello have also joined the cast.

Nonnas is based on the true story of Brooklyn native Joe Scaravella, who, after losing his beloved mother, realizes he’s wasted time at a dead-end job and yearns for a second chance at life.

Motivated by his Italian mother’s love of cooking, but with no culinary experience and dwindling funds, he opens a restaurant unlike any other by hiring the most unlikely team of chefs — one consisting of grandmothers.

Italian nonnas make their Sunday dinners every day of the week – except Christmas and Easter – for anyone who needs to feel at home. Through his new endeavor, Joe will find purpose, community, and love in the process, while discovering it’s never too late to start again.

Liz Maccie has written the script, while the film will be produced by Fifth Season and 1Community, who previously collaborated on Bryan Stevenson biopic Just Mercy. Accompanying the release of the film will be a social impact campaign put on by 1Community, which will aim to protect and strengthen “the programs that help us age well.”

Vaughn recently wrapped production on Apple TV+ drama series Bad Monkey from Scrubs and Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence. He’ll next be seen alongside Al Pacino, Michelle Monaghan, and Simon Rex in the drama Easy’s Waltz from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto.

He also has live-action/animation hybrid Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, and Aubrey Plaza in the works, as well as a belated sequel to his 2004 comedy Dodgeball.

Chbosky is best known for writing one of the most acclaimed coming-of-age novels of all time, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. He became the rare author to direct the adaptation of his own novel in 2012, and has since helmed Wonder and Dear Evan Hansen. His other novel is the 2019 psychological horror Imaginary Friend.
