Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger & Guy Pearce To Star In David Cronenberg’s ‘The Shrouds’

Vincent Cassel (La Haine), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and Guy Pearce (Memento) have all signed on to star in The Shrouds, the latest film from David Cronenberg.

This will mark Cassel’s third collaboration with the director after Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method, while Kruger replaces Léa Seydoux, who was previously announced for the role last summer.

The film will revolve around Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art but controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time.

Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife. He struggles to uncover a clear motive for the attack, which drives him to reevaluate his business, marriage, and fidelity to his late wife’s memory, as well as push him to new beginnings.

A movie about a device that allows people to watch the dead decompose is real time is so perfectly Cronenbergian that it could almost be a parody of his work. But as we saw last year with Crimes of the Future, the Canadian director has lost none of his touch, so expect yet another disturbing but interesting psychological drama.

Cassel most recently was seen in HBO’s Westworld and Apple TV+’s Liaison, and has the two-part French Three Musketeers epic due this year.

Kruger was recently seen in Neil Jordan‘s neo-noir Marlowe, while she recently wrapped filming on French film Visions. She’ll also play Marlene Dietrich in upcoming miniseries Marlene from In The Fade director Fatih Akin.

Pearce was recently seen in psychological thriller The Infernal Machine and action film Memory. His next film will be war drama The Convert, while he’s currently filming neo-noir Sunrise in Northern Ireland.

Filming on The Shrouds is expected to begin in May in Toronto.
