Woody Allen‘s latest, which is expected to make its debut on the annual Cannes festival, is a whimsical jazz affair, set in Hollywood’s 1930s, which explores “why life is worth living”. The ensemble cast includes Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Corey Stoll and Parker Posey.
Eisenberg’s titular character Bobbie moves to Hollywood, where his uncle Phil (Carell) works as a film agent, in the hopes of starting a career in the film industry. ‘Half-bored, half-fascinated’ with the spirit of the age, he manages to fall in love with the taken girl (Stewart), find himself in some family trouble and meet some fascinating people along the way.
All the necessary preconditions for a classical Woody Allen comedy are present here and it remains to be seen how Café Society will fit in with the rest of his filmography. Hopefully, somewhere closer to Midnight In Paris.
While a UK release date for Café Society hasn’t been revealed yet it will be released in the US in August. You can now watch the trailer for the latest Jesse Eisenberg/Kristen Stewart collaboration below.
