Director Dexter Fletcher made his feature debut with the acclaimed drama Wild Bill back in 2012 and next year see’s the release of his next film Eddie the Eagle a biopic about the first British ski jumper to compete in the Winter Olympics. I’m a big fan of sports dramas/biopics, everything from Rocky to Cool Running’s. There’s something about an underdog that we love to rally behind and never has there been a greater underdog than Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards.

The trailer does a great job of establishing the tone of the film, which appears to be a more fun, comedic take on the sports biopic. It comes from producer Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and it feels very much like a Matthew Vaughn film, complete with witty dialogue and a vibrant colour pallet.

Taron Egerton (who would make a perfect new Han Solo I might add) looks great in the role and he’s got the right mixture of likeable and dopey to make him the perfect protagonist for this kind of film. Huge Jackman play’s his drunken trainer (similar to John Candy in Cool Running’s) who gets a few laughs in the trailer but this is Egerton’s show. Needless to say, I can’t wait to see Eddie “The Eagle” fly next year!
