Respect the biopic about Aretha Franklin, hits theaters in August. Until then, we can watch the new trailer for the movie starring Jennifer Hudson as the soul diva.

 

The trailer features several Queen of Soul classics sung by Hudson like “Think”, “A Natural Woman” and “Respect”.

 

Respect is a biopic, and a musical film. It traces the life of the legendary singer Aretha Franklin, who died on August 16, 2018, from her childhood to fame and beyond. The film will be directed by Liesl Tommy.

 

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson, who will be playing Aretha Franklin in Respect, is an award-winning star. In 2007, she won an Oscar Award for her role in Dreamgirls, another musical film, which was based on soul legends The Supremes.

 

Hudson will star in Respect with Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Skye Dakota Turner, Tate Donovan, and Mary J. Blige.

 

The MGM studios had been forced to postpone the release of the film for seven months, due to covid-19 and the pandemic, but it will finally be shown in theaters this summer.

 

Aretha Franklin, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 76, had actively taken part in the development of this project. She herself had been thinking about a film adaptation of Aretha: From These Roots, her autobiography, since the end of the 1980s.
