If you’ve visited the viral website for Independence Day: Resurgence you probably know what happens to Will Smith’s character. If you haven’t, there are spoilers ahead. So stop here. The promotional website was launched online the day after the first trailer was released, and unveiled that Smith’s character Steven Hiller died “while test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter”.
During a recent interview with Yahoo Movies, Smith shared his thoughts on his character’s premature death and explained why he didn’t return for the sequel. “I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. [Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out…It was terrible when I found out my character died”.
Hiller’s wife portrayed by Vivica A. Fox, will be coming back for the sequel, while newcomer Jessie Usher is set to play Hiller’s son Dylan. The cast includes returning stars Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner and Bill Pullman and newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.
