With a new trailer for Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Ready Player One having dropped, excitement for a brand new blockbuster from the king of the genre has cranked up. In the mix of all that excitement, the author of the novel, Ernest Cline, has confirmed he’s writing a sequel to the book.
The question that instantly comes to mind is whether Spielberg himself or the fact that a film adaptation is coming has spurred this decision. During a Facebook Q&A regarding the film, Cline said: “It’s true. I can’t talk about it too much, but there’s no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they’ve already worked on when they’re watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life”.
Cline did add that he had bounced some ideas off the legendary director, but didn’t provide any specific details about the follow-up novel. What this could lead to seems obvious, but if the Ready Player One film adaptation is a box office hit, there’s going to be a written sequel ready to be adapted, which I’m sure is something Warner Bros. are licking their lips for.
Of course, this is all just speculation. There’s a chance that, even with Spielberg directing, the film doesn’t reach much of an audience since it’s not a franchise or established cinematic property. The trailer was trending #1 on YouTube, but whether that’s any indication of fan interest, who knows?
We’ll find out for sure when the film opens in cinemas March 30, 2018.
