The world finally got treated to its first look at Wonder Woman 1984 this week, and it looks terrific. But per THR, director Patty Jenkins already has a plan forming in her mind for Wonder Woman 3, and is even considering a spinoff focusing on The Amazons.
“We actually already know the whole story to it”, Jenkins said when asked about the potential (but highly probable) third film. She then expanded and talked about the idea for a Amazons-focused spinoff:
“It’s just a matter of, will we change our minds, and when [to make it]. I think what we don’t want to do is do it back to back. It’s been great doing these two movies back to back, but I think it’s important to give it a little rest in between. And I like doing other things in between”.
The Amazons were seen plenty in the first film. They’re an all-female society of superhumans, based on the Amazons of Greek mythology. There have been three major incarnations of these Amazons, and what two of the groups have in common is that they are the race which produced Wonder Woman.
There are too many spinoffs nowadays, and Wonder Woman doesn’t really need one, but if 1984 makes heaps of money, it will be tempting for Warner Bros. to finance one. But what Jenkins mentioned about having a rest inbetween suggests that she doesn’t want to merely sit in the world of Wonder Woman for her whole career (although expect her back for the likely third film).
We’ll see what happens financially when Wonder Woman 1984 hits cinemas June 5, 2020.
