John Wick, which has morphed from its origins as ostensibly a throwaway action film into a full blown franchise, is naturally coming back for a third bout of blood-spilling, neon-lit action, and so is writer Derek Kolstad.
Kolstad penned the first two films in the franchise, so this should make fans of the series jump for joy and hug their puppy. The surprising success of this series stems from the fact that the same crew has remained together for each film, allowing their no-nonsense vision to continually shine through.
The other good news is that the third film is being fast tracked to begin production in the autumn, so Kolstad better get moving soon or the film will have to shoot its barrage of effortless killing without a script, although director Chad Stahelski has already been working on a script for about two weeks.
Stahelski recently said he wanted the third film to be different from the previous two, and added how there were subtle parts of Chapter 2 that he wasn’t able to explore that he’d like to this time around:
“We want to show you cool and intricate details. What are those little details in everyday life? Hopefully – we make people look at garbage collectors and cleaner vans and homeless people a little differently now”.
So the John Wick franchise rolls on, a refreshingly blunt yet sophisticated series that’s not a reboot or remake and not based on pre-existing source material. A strange outlier in Hollywood but immensely satisfying for those who like their deadly headshots with a neon glow.
